[P1-41] Clinical Profile of Childhood Epilepsy in Yangon Children Hospital

This study aimed to classify childhood epilepsies according to classification scheme of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Commission on Classification and Terminology (2010) in Yangon Children Hospital (YCH). This was a cross sectional descriptive hospital based study of children with epilepsy in YCH. This one year study comprises 220 children with epilepsy, aged 1 month to 12 years attending medical units and outpatient neurology clinic of YCH. Regarding 2010 classification, generalized seizures were noted in 108 children with epilepsy, focal seizure was found in 81children, epileptic spasm occurred in 11 patients. Electroclinical syndrome diagnosis could be made in 21%. Benign Epilepsy with Centro-temporal Spikes was identified in 11 patients, West Syndrome in 9 patients, occipital epilepsies in 8 patients, possible Dravet Syndrome in 5 patients, Lennox Gastaut Syndrome in 5 patients, Childhood Absence Epilepsy in 4 patients, Progressive Myoclonic Epilepsy in 2 patients, Otahara Syndrome in one patient and Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy in one patient. Seven children were possible genetic cause, 97 children had structural/metabolic causes and the cause was unknown in 116 children. Classification of Myanmar children with epilepsy using ILAE 2010 Classification obtained in this study were generally comparable to those children of developing and developed countries in terms of seizure onset, seizure types and EEG abnormalities. However, because of shortage of necessary workup for epilepsy, unknown causes are still high. Therefore, ILAE 1981 classification of seizures and 1989 classification of epilepsies are still useful and applicable in resource poor setting like Myanmar.
