[P1-94] Epidemiology of prolonged febrile seizures in children at the age of 3

Masahiko Kimura (Kimura Children and Family Clinic, Japan)

Prolonged febrile seizures (FS), defined as lasting 10 minutes or more (Hesdorffer 2011), are one of the most urgent neurological conditions in childhood. Few epidemiologic studies about prolonged FS have been reported. We investigated a history of FS using a questionnaire at the time of the health-check program for three-year-old children in Izumo, Japan from April, 2016 to September, 2016. In 67 of the 527 questionnaires recovered, the children had a history of FS (67/527, 12.7%). The mean number of the seizures in each child was 1.6 (range 1-9). The number of seizures which did not cease at the arrival in hospitals was 6 in 6 children (6/67, 9% of the children with FS) and the number of seizures lasting more than 10 min was 11 in 11 children (11/67, 16%). The number of seizures required hospitalization more than one week was 6 in 6 children (6/67, 9%). Our results showed prolonged FS occurred in at least 9 % of children with FS. Because of the high prevalence of FS among Japanese children, as shown in our results, the frequency of prolonged FS is also high. Prolonged FS can cause neurological sequelae. These suggest prehospital treatment is necessary for the early seizure termination.
