[P2-147] Neonatal seizures: incidence, clinical features and EEG findings in NICU.

Siu-Ching Huo (Department of Pediatrics, Cathay General Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan)

[Objective] To evaluate the incidence, etiology and clinical features of seizures among neonates admitted to one medical center.
[Methodology] We retrospectively collected 22 neonates with diagnosed neonatal seizure at NICU of Cathay General Hospital, Taipei, from January to December 2015. The clinical picture, image study, EEG and laboratory tests including blood glucose, electrolytes were reviewed in all cases.
[Results] Neonatal seizures were diagnosed in 22 newborns. Most common type of seizures observed were subtle (72.7%) followed by tonic (13.6%) and clonic (12.5%) seizures. All cases had normal laboratory tests. 17(77.2%) cases had abnormal EEG (focal spikes in all) and 12(54.5%) cases had abnormal image findings. Perinatal asphyxia(59%) was the most common cause of neonatal seizures, followed by infection(9%), malformation syndrome (9%) and intracranial hemorrhage (4.5%)
[Conclusion] Neonatal seizures were found in about 18% of our neonatal ICU admissions and presented most commonly as subtle type. Perinatal asphyxia was the most common etiology of neonatal seizures, followed by infection. EEG plays a major role in the confirmation and follow-up of neonatal seizures.
