[P3-168] Effect of Media Exposure to Language Development
[Introduction] This study was performed to evaluate the association of media exposure and language developmental delay.
[Methodology] The subjects consisted of 40 patients with language developmental delay who visited to the pediatric developmental clinic of Dongtan sacred heart hospital from January 2013 to July 2015. Sixty six patients who visited our clinic without language developmental delay were included in the control group.
Data were collected through self-report questionnaires that consist of media exposure time, media contents, background or foreground media exposure, the age of first exposure, exposure with or without parents. We compared the media exposure characteristics between patients with language delay and control group
[Results] The mean age of language delay group was 33.6 10 months and male to female ratio was 2.6:1. There was no difference of the mean age, the ratio of sex, education status of parents between language delay group and control group.
Regarding of media exposure time, 63% of language delay patients was exposed more than 2 hours to media, versus to control group, 16%. Of language delay group, 90% was exposed to media earlier than 24 months compared to control group, 58%.
[Conclusions] Language developmental delay patients had higher and earlier media exposure than control group. According to result, longer and earlier exposure to media would be risk factors in language developmental delay
