[P3-175] A Prospective Study of Sleep Disturbances in Children with Developmental Delay

Fous S Lebbe (Lady Ridgeway Hospital Colombo, Sri Lanka)

[Objective] To observe the prevalence of sleep disturbances in children with developmental delay.
[Methods] 100 patients with developmental delay with Cerebral palsy (74%) Down’s syndrome (5%) Myopathy (6%) Neuropathy (5%) and Autism spectrum disorders (10%) were included in the study from all over the island with age range from 14 days to 14.5 years with mean age of 3.9 years. Male: Female -1.2:1.
Sleep disturbances were assessed by Sleep disturbances Scale for Children (SDSC) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)
[Results] 63% of patients had sleep disturbances such as Disorder of Initiating and Maintaining Sleep (DIMS), Disorder of Excessive Somnolence and Disorder of Arousal.
[Conclusion] The developmentally delayed children with different underlying etiologies have significant sleep disturbances which are not much addressed.
Further studies have to be done to identify more precise causative factors for the sleep disturbances such as associated seizure disorders, drugs, pain, gastro esophageal reflux disease and parental literacy level.
