[P3-179] 10-minute-triage for acute headache with Kanpo medicine (Japanese traditional medicine)

Tadashi Matsuda (Misato Family Clinic, Misato, Saitama, Japan)

[Introduction] Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are recommended for children’s migraine first, however these medications might mislead medication overuse headache in their future. Therefore we strongly recommend to apply Kanpo medicine against acute headache for children, which is derived from natural hurbs. Goreisan (Poria Powder with Five Hurbs; GR) and Goshuyuto (Evodia Decoction; GS) are well-known Kanpo medeicine against migraine. We have investigated effectiveness of combination therapy with GR and GS against acute headache.
[Methodology] Subjects are patients with acute headache who had visited our clinic from Jan. 5th through Oct. 31st in 2015. Cases having focal signs, meningeal signs, frequent vomiting, or high fever were excluded, therefore 31 patients were eligible for this study. Age; 7-15 (Ave. 11.8). Female/male=18/13. All patients were given orally GR and GS simultaneously. Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) of each headache had been obtained 10 minutes after intervention.
[Results] GR and GS have shown effective in 27 cases (87.1%) within 10 minutes after intervention.
NRS 0-3/10; 13 cases (48.2%). NRS 4-5/10; 9 cases (33.3%). NRS 6-8/10; 5 cases (18.5%), who had given another GR and GS 15 minutes later after first intervention, subsequently all NRS of this group had dropped below 3/10 after second intervention. Cases of non-responders (n=4) ; brain tumor (n=1), sinusitis (n=1), stress-induced (n=2) which were treated with other Kanpo medicine successfully.
[Conclusions]. Combination therapy of GR and GS are mostly effective within 10 minutes. Secondary headache could be triaged easily, quickly, and safely by means of no response to GR and GS.
