[P3-181] Clinical manifestations of headache in preschool children
The aim of this study is to describe the characteristics of headache in children younger than 7 years of age. We reviewed clinical files, collected over 3 years, related to children with a diagnosis of headache whose ages were younger than 7 years. One hundred and forty-six children were included in this study (66 males, 80 females; mean age 5.5±1.0 years). Disease duration was 5.8±7.9 months (longer than 3 months in 70 patients, shorter than 6 months in 76 patients). Attack durations were longer than 2 hours in 31 patients, shorter than 2 hours in 70 patients, and unchecked in 45 patients. Attack frequency was 15.1 ± 10.6 times per month (over 4 times in 96 patients, under 4 times in 18 patients, uncheckable in 32 patients). Locations of the pain were variable, and characteristics of pain were also variable. Mean severity of pain was 5.1±2.2 by faces pain rating scale. Medications were used in 29 patients; acetaminophen in 17 patients, ibuprofen in 8 patients, topiramate in 2 patients, amitriptyline in a patients, and naproxen in a patient. Thirty-eight patients were recorded electroencephalogram, and 9 of them showed abnormal findings. Forty-one patients had been brain magnetic resonance imaging, twenty of them showed positive findings. Final diagnosis were 34 migraine, 5 tension type headache, and 3 congenital malformations. Over 90% of patients showed improved headache after hospital visit. In children younger than 7 years of age, the clinical manifestations of headache are variable but usually benign.
