[P3-58] Impact of neural precursor cell transplantation on convulsive seizure occurrence and EEG change in pediatric patients with brain injuries: A clinical comparative study

Suqing QU (Department of Pediatrics, Navy General Hospital, Beijing, P. R. China.)

[Purpose]: To observe the impact of neural precursor cell transplantation on convulsive seizure occurrence and electroencephalographic (EEG) change in two groups of pediatric patients with brain injuries with or without complicated epilepsy.
[Method]: The 58 patients were assigned to two groups between March 2008 and July 2012.Using a video EEG, EEG was monitored before operation and one month after operation in all patients. Patients who developed seizure recurrence and new seizure occurrence were followed up at 6 months and two years after operation.
[Results]: In group A, EEG was improved in 6 patients, became worse in 3 patients, and remained unchanged in 21 patients versus 5, 2 and 21 patients in group B. In group A, two children developed new seizures during hospitalization within a month after operation, including muscular spasm in one patient, and generalized tonic spasm with fever in the other. No seizure recurrence was observed after discharge from the hospital in these two patients. In group 2, convulsive change was observed in 3 patients. No significant change was observed in the remaining 25 patients with respect to the frequency and severity of seizure occurrence.
[Conclusions]: EEG changes in some patients and seizure recurrence or new seizure occurrence in individual patients were observed in both groups after ventricular neural precursor cell transplantation.
