Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have difficulty in recognition of faces. However, little is known about their atypical neural basis for the facial recognition. In this symposium, I will present two types of facial recognition studies. The first is recognizing emotional facial expressions (happy and angry expressions). The ADHD children showed increased brain activities for happy faces but not for angry faces, while typically developing (TD) children showed increased brain activities for both expressions. The second study is recognizing familiar face (their own mother’s faces). The ADHD children showed earlier increase in brain activities than TD children. And I am also presenting about medication effects on ADHD using fNIRS.
