[R4-14] Spectroscopic Characterization of Major Interlayer Cations in Smectite

The objective of this study is to establish a method for estimating the interlayer cation composition from spectroscopic data of persivialance. Infrared spectroscopic measurements were performed on smectite with a known fraction of interlayer cation species prepared in the laboratory. The increase or decrease in absorptivity and the shift in peak position of the measured data were analyzed and compared with the results of spectroscopic measurements of smectite made on Mars by Parsivierance to see if it is possible to determine the interlayer cation composition of Martian smectite.
