[S1R6-04] Crystallization experiments of supercooled rhyolitic melt
Keywords:Crystallization, Cristobalite, Spherulite, Secondary boiling
We conducted crystallization experiments of supercooled rhyolitic melt to reveal how crystallization and vesiculation occur inside silicic lavas. Results showed that various types of crystals and vesicles were formed in the sample. A cristobalite layer was formed on the sample surface and a spherulite layer developed on that layer. Spherulites also formed in the interior of the sample. Vesicularity of the melt increased with time as a result of secondary boiling driven by spherulite formation.
