The 37th Annual Conference of the Japanese Association for South Asian Studies

Message from the Host Institution

The 37th JASAS Annual Conference will be held at the National Museum of Ethnology on 28 and 29 September 2024. At present, the conference will be held face-to-face mode only.

With general elections in Bangladesh and Pakistan at the beginning of this year, general elections to be held in India by May, and the possibility of a presidential election in Sri Lanka by the end of the year, this is an election year that will determine the immediate political future of many states in a geographical space referred to as South Asia today. In view of the growing global presence of South Asia, the nature and results of these elections are likely to have a significant impact not only on international affairs but also on the nature of democracy.

The JASAS Annual Conference has been a forum for discussion on contemporary politics and society, as well as for the exchange of research on people, life, goods, things, ideas and values that arise in this geographical space and spread to the world. Preparations are also underway for the Plenary Panel to be held on themes that many members can participate in. We will also organize the conference so that individual papers on a wide variety of themes can be discussed beyond the existing disciplines.

We look forward to seeing you at the National Museum of Ethnology.
