[2F203] Developments in Agro-food Business Industries: Mapping the Philippine Mango Industry's Value Chain and Innovation System Interactions
Keywords:global value chain, innovation system, mango industry, Philippines
As one of the best-known fruits from the Philippines, mangoes have been a vital industry that the country may capitalize further. However, recent data has revealed a downward trend in its production and export. Moreover, innovations in the local industry have been lagging behind countries that compete in the global mango market. While there are plans to develop the sector, the local mango industry appears to still remain disconnected from one another. Previous studies have attempted to map key value chain industry actors and processes, but none have yet to show how innovations in the sector may occur and how innovation actors, such as intermediaries, may interact to ensure that new technologies and processes are diffused to critical actors. This study attempted to do such by mapping the value chain and innovation system of the Philippine mango industry. Using a case study approach, this paper presents a comprehensive look into how innovation is created and diffused in and through different mango value chain segments. Data for the study was taken through key informant interviews and document analysis from March 2020 to November 2021. This study places itself in the agricultural innovation and global value chain literature and provides further evidence to the interactions between the two systems. Based on the mapped results of this study, several policy management implications are also offered.
