[U-15] JpGU's mission against giant earthquake and tsunami disasters: last 10 years and the future

Sat. Jun 5, 2021 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM Ch.01 (Zoom Room 01)

convener:Koji Okumura(Graduate School of Letters, Hiroshima University), Yoshinori MIYACHI(Geological Survey of Japan, AIST), Hitoshi SAITO(College of Economics, Kanto Gakuin University), Chairperson:Koji Okumura(Graduate School of Letters, Hiroshima University), Yoshinori MIYACHI(Geological Survey of Japan, AIST), Hitoshi SAITO(College of Economics, Kanto Gakuin University)

10 years have passed since the M9.0 2011 Tohoku Taiheiyo-Oki earthquake. Devastating disasters by strong and wide-spread ground motion, many fatalities and destruction of coastal area by huge tsunamis, and the accidents of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant greatly impacted Japanese society and scientific community. Recovery from the damages is still under way. Meantime, the next giant earthquake from Nansai Trough is approaching. Researchers in earth and planetary sciences have been working hard on large earthquakes and tsunamis. In addition, researchers are obliged to contribute to the safe society from these disasters. 2011 great Tohoku disasters introduced collaboration of all disciplines in earth and planetary sciences together with related scientific communities. This session aims at first to summarize our scientific achievement with emphasis on the output to and the interaction with the society for disaster mitigation in these 10 years. Then we discuss about our missions against giant earthquakes and tsunamis in coming 10 years or before the next big one. The discussion will cover our contributions to national and local government efforts for disaster mitigation, risk management and hazard responses of individuals and organizations, and education on hazards and disasters.
