The Seismological Society of Japan has been recommending members to the Japan Geopark Committee since the beginning of geopark activities in Japan. As a project of the Social Activity Fund, the Seismological Society of Japan has held seminars for residents in Sanriku (2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake), Kurikoma (2008 Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku Earthquake), and Aso (2016 Kumamoto Earthquake) Geoparks. Children's Summer School on Earthquake and Volcanoes and Teacher's License Renewal Course have been held with the support of the geoparks in the areas.
Efforts to establish a committee to support geopark activities began in 2014 with the establishment of the Geopark Working Group. In addition, a series of articles on Japanese Geoparks began in "Nai Furu". In 2016, the Preparatory Working Group for the Geopark Assistance Committee was set up to study the support activities of the Seismological Society of Japan and the need for support. In 2017, The Geopark Support Committee was established.
The main activities of the Geopark Assistance Committee are earthquake seminar for geopark staffs and geopark tours for members of the Seismological Society of Japan. In 2017-2019, the earthquake seminar held in Makuhari during JpGU: in 2017, how to obtain and use seismic data obtained from Hi-net, K-NET, and KiK-net in real-time, and how to use seabed topographic map data, in 2018, the introduction of past damaging earthquakes (historical earthquakes) around Japanese Geoparks, and in 2019, demonstration of various functions and usage of GSI maps.
Geopark tours are conducted with the cooperation of geoparks after the Fall Meeting of Seismological Society of Japan: Aso Geopark and Mashiki Town in 2017, Bandaisan Geopark and Aizuwakamatsu City in 2018, and a tour of Abuyama Observatory, Kyoto University, and the Hanaore Fault withOike Guide, although those are not a geopark, in 2019.
The Geopark Assistance Committee discussed how to realize seismic activity at a geosite, and the NIED implemented the "NIED Quake map!". Itoigawa UNESCO Global Geopark introduced it with the reopening of Fossa Magna Park in July 2018, and as of February 2021, it has also been introduced in Hakusan Tedorigawa Geopark, Shikoku Seiyo Geopark, Happo-Shirakami Geopark, and Sanriku Geopark.
In 2020, the JpGU was postponed and held remotely, so that we held an online earthquake seminar in October. The main theme of the workshop was how to communicate seismic activity. There were presentations as follows: how to find out about historical earthquakes and disasters, how the Hot Spring Research Institute, Kanagawa Prefecture, as a home doctor, and the Hakone Geomuseum disseminates information about the activities of the Hakone Volcano in 2015 to a local society, and examples of the use of the "NIED Quake map!" from five geoparks. The number of participants was 62, the largest number in the past. The results of the post-event questionnaire showed the usefulness of the online seminar.
We would like to improve the scientific value of Geopark activities and communicate with the local community through Geoparks, together with those in Geoparks, by continuing to support Geopark activities.
Acknowledgments: We are grateful to the Japanese Geoparks Network and those in the Geoparks for their cooperation to the activities of the Geopark Assistance Committee, the Seismological Society of Japan.
