Geoparks evaluate and organize the legal protection of geoscientific heritage sites such as geosites. According to the "Guidelines for the Conservation of Natural Resources of the Japanese Geopark Network" (2018) formulated by the Japan Geopark Network Conservation Working Group, research and data collection on geosites to evaluate their scientific value and conservation plans It is stated that important geosites that have been formulated will be legally protected. The Natural Parks Act, the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties, and the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties of prefectures and municipalities are applied as general legal protection and security measures in Japan. Recently, the outcrops of the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, which is the most important geosite of the Itoigawa UNESCO Global Geopark, and the Mizonokuchi Cave of the Kirishima Geopark are in early 2021. It is expected to be designated as a natural monument. In addition, in recent years, it has been designated as a natural monument in domestic geoparks such as Byobugaura in Choshi Geopark, Sedimentary layers and the marine mammal fossils in Paleo-Chichibu-Bay in Chichibu Geopark. On the other hand, there is an opinion that it is necessary to clarify the procedure by regulation accompanying the designation of natural monuments, and to support private organizations and local governments that promote the utilization of academic research, education, tourism use, etc. Therefore, this time, based on this situation in Japan, we will explain the natural monument system, and the status of support for natural monument designation standards and flows, laws and regulations, preservation and utilization plan formulation, surveys and maintenance before and after designation.
