[SGD01-P08] Elusive correlation between deformation, seismicity, and eruptions at Rincon de la Vieja Volcano in Costa Rica

Rincon de la Vieja Volcano is the most active volcano of the Guanacaste Volcanic Cordillera, in Costa Rica. Historical and recent activity is characterized by periodic gas emissions, phreatic and phreatomagmatic eruptions, isolated or grouped in a period of 5-7 years, every 40 ± 10 years in the last century and a half (Soto, 2010). In 2020, more than a thousand eruptions where detected.


We processed observations from 3 GNSS sites located within the Rincon de la Vieja volcano. Seasonal and tectonic effects were removed from the GNSS time series and we calculated horizontal velocities of a combination of baselines crossing the volcanic complex. We varied the time windows to get robust deformation rates, detecting significant extension and contraction of the volcano crust that peaks at 70 mm/yr both in contraction and extension.


We compare these results with seismicity and eruptions of the volcano; however, correlation is elusive, probably due to the short historical data for deformation, seismicity and eruption available. Analysis will be continued to evaluate correlation between parameters.
