[MZZ52-P04] Quarrying and usage situation of building stones at the northern Kanto district

*Naoki Takahashi1, Takuya Akashi2 (1.Natural History Museum and Institute, Chiba, 2.Hisui-no-kai)

Keywords:building stone, northern Kanto district, quarry, stonework

There are some quarries of building stone in the northern Kanto district now, such as Oya-ishi in Utsunomiya City and Ashino-ishi in Nasu Town, Tochigi Prefecture. On the other hand, many old quarries which finished quarrying are exist in same area, and we can find their usage example as building materials in urban area or stonework in shrines and temples.
They are all Cenozoic tuffaceous rocks: Yabuzuka-ishi (Ota-shi, Gunma Prefecture: Early Miocene Yabuzuka Formation), Kaneyama-ishi (crushed rocks) (Ota-shi, Gunma Prefecture: Paleogene Kaneyama welded tuff), Tenjinyama-ishi (Midori-shi, Gunma Prefecture: Late Miocene Mamioka Formation), Iwafune-ishi (Tochigi-shi, Tochigi Prefecture: Early Miocene Hinata Formation), Motegi-ishi (Motegi-machi, Tochigi Prefecture: Early Miocene Nakagawa Group, Motegi Formation), Ashinuma-ishi (Mashiko-machi, Tochigi Prefecture: Early Miocene Nakagawa Group, Motegi Formation) and Isoyama-ishi (Moka-shi, Tochigi Prefecture: Early Miocene Nakagawa Group, Yamanouchi Formation?), etc. Their usage examples are found in the local area, and few examples in the capital area, Iwafune-ishi and Tenjinyama-ishi. Shipping of Yabuzuka-ishi toward the capital area are confirmed in literature, but not found in the area at this time. Ashinuma-ishi are used for glaze of the Mashiko-yaki pottery.
Traces of quarrying of regular quadratic prism shape building stones are found in the quarry of Yabuzuka-ishi, Motegi-ishi, Ashinuma-ish and Isoyama-ishi. They are traces by human power used pickax, but traces of chainsaw are found in the quarry of Motegi-ishi. So,the quarrying of the Motegi-ish have been continued until at least Showa 30’s.
Quarrying of Neogene tuffaceous rocks have been done at many places in the northern Kanto district, and they were used in the local area and partly the capital area. We want to survey details of the usage area and the history of quarrying of their building stones from now on.
