In 2015, countries around the world adopted the United Nations Agenda 2030 which contains the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. 17 Goals, 169 targets, 230 indicators. Each collectively aimed at ensuring a healthier and more sustainable global society both now and into the future. While some goals explicitly align strongly with the geosciences, such as 13: Climate Action and 14: Life Below Water, the geosciences do have a role to play in all 17. AGU’s strategic plan builds on the bedrock of discovery science and emphasizes the necessity of greater advancements in solution science. It charges the community to collaborate and innovate ways their science can inform solutions to society’s greatest challenges laid out in the U.N. Global Goals. This includes partnering with local communities, other disciplines of science and engineering, as well as engaging with policymakers and the public to co-produce science that ensures it moves from usable to used. This presentation will highlight AGU programs like the Thriving Earth Exchange, Voices for Science, GeoHealth, and others that enable transdisciplinary outreach and produce new forms of knowledge creation and sharing to inform a more sustainable and just future.
