The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were adopted at the Sustainable Development Summit held at the United Nations in September 2015. The promotion of No. 14, "Life in the water," is the slowest among them, and accelerated promotion of No. 14 is recommended by the UN to member countries for the period 2021-2030 as the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (hereinafter referred to as UNDOS). The UNDOS has seven social goals: clean ocean, healthy and resilient ocean, productive ocean, predictable ocean, safe ocean, accessible ocean, and inspiring and engaging ocean. Toward these seven goals, various activities are being undertaken to protect the marine environment in collaboration with society, such as promoting understanding and prediction of the ocean and climate change, improving ocean literacy, and encouraging people to change their behavior. For example, an encyclopedia of the marine environment is currently being compiled. Still, it was not created from a researcher's point of view: the items that the researcher wanted to convey were selected and written accordingly. We conducted a questionnaire survey of the general public and selected people not interested in the oceans to participate in the workshop. At the workshop, we gathered information through discussion on what they thought about the ocean, their interests, and what kind of information they would like to see in an encyclopedia of the marine environment, to create an encyclopedia from the perspective of what readers would want. In addition to creating an encyclopedia of the marine environment, we would like to introduce some other activities the presenters are involved in, such as holding symposiums and creating case studies.
