[U14-03] Win-win relationship between ocean science and coastal fisheries

Keywords:ocean model, in-situ measurement, coastal fisheries, data assimilation

Coastal fishing economy has been shrinking in Japan. To encourage the small-scale fisheries, a new research and development project "Smart coastal fisheries with information and communication technology" was funded by Japan Fisheries Agency in FY2018-2022. The virtue of small fisheries is the small influence to the environment. Our accurate ocean prediction can help their effective operations to catch the bare minimum of fishes at minimum cost. The coastal ocean prediction in the Tsushima Strait area has been quickly recognized by the local fishermen. They access frequently our ocean prediction through Android App, and discussing the best fishing ground/time before the departure. Minimization of fuel and labor time should improve their income and working environment. At the same, the surprizing number of in-situ measurement data helps understanding coastal ocean dynamics. Thus we are establishing win-win relationship between ocean science and coastal fisheries.
