Bio-based 5-HMF is a versatile material with valuable market potentials. As high as 90 % fructose conversion and 93 % 5-HMF selectivity were achieved in a designed water-dioxane-methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) system with amberlyst 70 as dehydration catalyst by continuous flow processing. The addition of organic solvent greatly increased the dehydration rate. Furthermore, FTIR analysis demonstrated the higher stability of 5-HMF in this solvent system and thereby reducing the side reactions. The catalyst showed an efficient stability after 10 h in continuous flow at 120 °C without significant change of the catalytic performance.

Utilization of biomass as a renewable organic resource has been developing. There is a large amount of biomass on the earth, so if we can use biomass as a chemical raw material, it may contribute to low carbonization. So far, catalytic reactions that efficiently convert cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin have been extensively studied by many groups, and in some cases starting biomass is advantageous in the synthesis of oxygen-containing compounds such as sugars. In this talk, we will show our recent work on the depolymerization of biomass and the conversion of sugar compounds by heterogeneous catalysts.
