Polypropylene (PP), as one of the most representable commodity plastics, has been widely employed with a range of nanofillers to endow new functionalities. The main challenge in creating PP-based nanocomposites is to overcome the chemical inertness of PP, which leads to poor compatibility and weak interfacial bonding with the inorganic filler surfaces. Our group have reported the preparation of PP-OTMS, which is PP-based copolymer incorporating (7-octen-1-yl)trimethoxysilane (OTMS) as a comonomer with an amount of less than one comonomer unit per polymer chain using a Ziegler-Natta catalyst. To further improve the mechanical properties, trichlorosilanes with different alkyl chain lengths were exploited at different amounts for surface modification of SiO2 prior to melt mixing with PP-OTMS as a matrix.
