Autothermal reforming (ATR) of methanol is important as a reaction to supply hydrogen to fuel cells. In addition, the application of biomass-derived methanol (biomethanol) has attracted attention to realize a carbon neutral society. The catalytic activity and stability of Cu-based catalysts in ATR of methanol with lower alcohols, which are contained in biomethanol as impurities, were decreased due to deposition of carbon species on the surface of catalysts. The addition of Ni or Ru to Cu-based catalysts improved the stability of Cu-based catalysts because lower alcohols were decomposed and the carbon species were not deposited.
