[1F14] Crystalline Zr3SO9 oxides with superior acid catalytic property to the conventional sulfated zirconia

Sulfated zirconia has attracted great interest due to its robust acidity and high activities are realized in several important acid-catalyzed industrial reactions. However, its catalytically active structure has scarcely been understood so far due to the nonuniformity of its structure. Here, we successfully synthesized crystalline Zr3SO9 by hydrothermal synthesis. This material was comprised of a uniform structural arrangement including sulfate and exhibited outstanding catalytic activity for several acid reactions. Based on the crystal structure-catalytic activity relationship, acid catalysis over sulfated zirconia was clarified.
