There are many hot springs in each region of Hokkaido, and they are one of the tourism resources. Hot spring gas often contains methane and carbon dioxide, which are currently released into the atmosphere as greenhouse gases. In 2021, we collected hot spring gas in Hokkaido with the Hokkaido Research Organization. Attempts to a direct methane reforming reaction with hot spring gas, were successfully hydrogen generation by a chemical reaction that does not generate carbon dioxide. In addition, carbon could be recovered as carbon nanotubes with high utility value.
