In this study, we found that modification of the surface of highly active PdAg alloy nanoparticles with trivalent Cr oxides exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the hydrogen production reaction from formic acid. The catalytic activity was about 1.6 times higher than that of PdAg, and the initial turnover frequency (TOF) was 6898h-1 at 348K. Kinetic analysis and DFT calculations suggest that this superior catalytic activity is due to the formation of electron-rich Pd by the Cr oxide modification of the PdAg alloy, which promotes the processes of C-H bond cleavage and H2 desorption.
