[1M5-OS-14b-04] Effects of Nonverbal Communication in Robot Assisted Learning

〇Tatsunori Matsui1 (1. Waseda University)

Keywords:Robot Assisted Learning, Nonverbal Communication, Intrinsic Motivation

We are conducting basic research on the use of robots as an educational medium to guide learners' intrinsic motivation. In particular, we expect the effect of communication between the learner and the robot through non-verbal information. Furthermore, we view intrinsic motivation in robot-learner interactions as the following sequence: 1) induction into the learning environment through anthropomorphism (increasing immersion), 2) intention estimation regarding robot behaviour, and 3) proactive decision-making regarding actions. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to (1) investigate the sense of security and learning motivation generated by a learning support robot with non-verbal information (corresponding to 1) above), (2) induce learners' intention estimation for the security behaviour of a learning support robot using vibration stimuli (corresponding to 2) above), and (3) intrinsically motivate learners. (3) Experimental verification of the formation of "peer-ness" through long-term non-verbal interaction with the robot (corresponding to 3) above), and discuss the effects of non-verbal communication in learning support by a robot.
