The degradation of dielectric response at interfaces known as the dead layer effect is a barrier against further scaling of semiconductor devices. A possible solution utilizing ferroelectric negative capacitance has been demonstrated experimentally. Here, we discuss the role of polarization domain dynamics and defects in the emergence of negative capacitance using first-principles simulation.
