We perform a comprehensive numerical study on optical binding forces on silicon dimers induced by the normal illumination of a plane wave in the visible region. Si dimers provide either repulsive (anti-bonding) or attractive (bonding) forces in water environment while only attractive forces in ambient air environment. Enhancement of the magnetic dipole modes with increasing the environmental refractive index is attributed to generation of the repulsive forces. The sing (attractive/repulsive) and the amplitude of the optical binding forces are found to be controlled by the gap distance between Si nanoparticles and also by the incident polarization.
