We have developed a new type of plasma generation method at the gas-liquid interface, and succeeded in the synthesis of performic acid (PFA) under neutral condition with pure CO2 as the feed gas. The characteristic feature of our device is its upside-down structure; the upper mesh electrode separates water and gas phases and discharge is generated in the gas phase below. We have performed spectroscopic diagnostics and Boltzmann analysis of the discharge plasma and concluded that PFA is generated in the reaction zone around the interface between reactive species generated from H2O molecules and vibrationally excited CO2 molecules.
