Recently, the power conversion efficiency of polymer solar cells has been improved up to more than 10%, which is comparable to that of amorphous silicon solar cells. For further improvements, it is still required to understand photovoltaic conversion mechanism correctly and to pioneer new approaches to boost the photovoltaic performance. In this talk, I will describe the charge generation mechanism studied by transient absorption measurements and dye sensitization of polymer solar cells based on ternary blends of polymer, fullerene, and near-IR dye molecules.
