Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) from mid infrared to far infrared regions have been studied extensively. However, QCL in 25-50μm region is difficult to realize because the wavelength region corresponds to Reststrahlen band between LO and TO phonon frequencies in conventional III-V compounds. We propose a QCL using IV-VI materials and utilizing deep impurity level for carrier reduction. Since lead-salt IV-VI materials have very low phonon frequencies, light propagation in this wavelength region is possible in the lead-salt IV-VI materials.
