Thermoacoustic phenomena include spontaneous oscillations of a gas column confined in an externally heated tube and generation of low temperatures by sound, and so on. Based on these thermoacoustic phenomena, new acoustic devices functioning as acoustical heat engines are being developed. Thermoacoustics is a discipline that aims at understanding of these phenomena and their applications. Our talk will introduce the outline and recent progress of thermoacosutics.
