Pump modulation is a method to modulate signal via modulating the pump in a gain fiber amplifier system. Pump to signal transfer of modulation index was theoretically studied previously in erbium-doped fiber (EDF) amplifier systems, suggesting that pump to signal transfer exhibits a low pass filter characteristics. Here, we present the pump to signal transfer in ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) experimentally. Results showed that pump to signal transfer in YDF was similar to EDF. It also showed that at low frequency, higher saturation led to lower transfer while higher pumping led to higher transfer.
