In solar cells and catalysis, highly energetic “hot electrons” on the skirt of thermal distribution are transferred over a potential barrier and chemical reactions take place. Therefore, lowering the barrier height is the essentially important for improving the efficiency, but there was no discussion on excited states which lower the barrier height.
In the present paper, we disclose a novel diagnostic of excited state using the first theory of hot electrons. Applying the theory has revealed the excited states in the conduction band of a single cluster of TiO2 nano-particles.
