Keywords:Laser-induced periodic surface structures, laser-matter interactions

Large number of papers related to Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) have been reported since 1999. However, its mechanism is still subject to debate due to the difficulties associated with in situ measurements of laser–matter interactions over a short time scale with high spatial resolution. In this paper, the experimental results of LIPSS are summarized and recent activities of in situ measurements of laser–matter interactions for discussing LIPSS formation mechanism is presented.
