Carbon nanotube (CNT) is a potential candidate for efficient thermal management due to significant thermal conductivity (k) of individual CNT (as theoretically estimated). In this work aligned CNT lines were fabricated by drawing the extruded ink through a needle on a substrate, also known as direct ink writing. The composition and dispersion quality of the CNT/polymer composite ink, substrate wettability, drawing parameters (i.e., relative drawing speed, dispensing speed, needle diameter, the gap between the needle tip and the substrate), and their inter-relation were noticed to produce a net effect on the degree and distribution of CNT orientation. Via systematic tuning of these parameters, the optimum CNT alignment was attained. A mathematical model was derived for ink’s velocity gradient, in the needle and the shear stress, acting on the CNTs. Experimental trends of CNT alignment were in good agreement with the simulated trends. High k was obtained for the optimally aligned CNT films.
