Hakata Dolls, which are said to have their origins in unglazed dolls made by craftsmen gathered by Sir Nagamasa Kuroda in early 1600s, have been highly evaluated as artworks since the 1920s. And they rapidly increased the number of production and the value of production in the 1980~90s. However, nowadays, due to the westernization of lifestyle, the traditional Japanese style alcove disappears from the homes.
As a result, the traditional existence value of Hakata Dolls has declined significantly. And recently, craftsmen have emerged who are trying to expand the range of expression by changing Hakata dolls from crafts to contemporary arts.
