ABSTRACT Thermal treatment (TT), thermal assisted with the following N2 expression treatment (T-NET), and thermal assisted with the following mechanical expression treatment (T-MET) were used to investigate the dewatering of Loy Yang lignite. Residual water contents of all of the samples were measured by weighing the samples before and after heating in an over at 105 °C for 6 h. The results showed that above 200°C, it is not energy efficient to remove the remaining water by TT. As to T-NET, residual water contents of T-NET treated samples and corresponding HT treated samples were similar, suggesting that the following N2 expression treatment can not improve TT. It is interesting that the residual water content of T-NET treated sample at 200 °C changed slight relative to that of T-NET treated sample at 250 °C. This can be attributed to the higher pressure in the reactor at 250 °C than that at 200°C, which can forbid the removal of water from lignite. Therefore, the competition between the increase of residual water content with the increasing temperature and the decrease in residual water content with increasing pressure led to the result. For T-MET, its residual water content can reach a very low value (0.92%), which indicates that the following mechanical expression treatment can be treated as a method for improving TT.
