[G-06] Is the wingless expression necessary for the wing color pattern formation of Drosophila guttifera?
In understanding morphogenesis based on gene expression, it is important to clarify whether the expression is necessary or sufficient for the formation. Wing color patterns of Drosophilids are models of the study about the relationship between morphological evolution and gene expression. For example, the wingless gene expression on mid-pupal wing veins gained the color-patterning role in wings of Drosophila guttifera in the course of evolution. However, it is not completely examined that the wingless expression is necessary for the patterning. In this study, we confirmed the necessity by inducing the wingless RNAi using the Gal4/UAS system. As a result, this RNAi modified the color pattern, but the influence seemed to differ among vein positions. From this result, we concluded that wingless expression on mid-pupal wing veins is necessary for the pattern formation. Considering the difference of phenotypic influence, the degree of necessity might be different among physical positions.
