[S23] Disease treatment with a new strategy targeting vascular permeability

Blood vessels dynamically alter their permeability to regulate the transfer of solutes from the blood to organ tissues. For example, through the blood-brain barrier, the permeability of the cerebral blood vessels is kept low. This protects the brain from absorbing toxic substances, but it also interferes with the treatment of brain disease by inhibiting the drug delivery to the brain. Blood vessel permeability is involved in the maintenance of homeostasis and induction, and promotion of diseases. For example, excessive vascular permeability in severe infections enhances leakage of the blood components and induces organ failure. Therefore, elucidating the control mechanism for vascular permeability and creating technologies to alter it will lead to the development of new drugs and drug delivery systems. In this symposium, we will introduce the functions of proteins that regulate vascular permeability and propose drugs and drug delivery technology that target these proteins. We also introduce the novel technology of using ultrasound and microbubbles to control vascular permeability. We will discuss how this novel strategy of targeting vascular permeability is a useful and effective approach to treat various intractable disease, including infections, inflammatory diseases, brain diseases, and cancer.
