[S40] Synthetic organic chemistry: The young challengers

This symposium, "Young Challengers in Synthetic Organic Chemistry", has been held continuously from the 121st Annual Meeting of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan. It aims at encouraging young synthetic chemists by giving them an opportunity for lively discussions to contribute to the further development of organic synthesis in the Pharmaceutical Society.
In pharmaceutical sciences, organic synthesis has grown as a discipline mainly for development of small-molecule drugs or chemical probes for investigating biological functions of living organisms. However, middle-sized molecules based on peptides and nucleic acids as well as biotechnology-based molecules have been recently attracted attention as high-potential new modalities for drug development. In addition, the academic system in Japan starts changing from the traditional one as seen in introduction of the tenure-tracking system. Young chemists are expected to pursue their original project and make an innovation for creating this new normal era of organic synthesis.
In this symposium, five young researchers from various fields will share their recent research progresses and philosophies. We believe that this symposium will spur innovative advances in participants' researches.
