[S42] Current status and issues of cosmetics development

Mon. Mar 28, 2022 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM [Room E] Reception Hall (Bldg. 1: 4F)

Organizer: Yoshiaki Ikarashi (NIHS), Takumi Akiyama (NIHS)

A wide variety of substances, including natural products and synthetic chemicals, are used in cosmetics to meet consumer demands. While the number of cosmetics containing natural ingredients is currently increasing, the number of applications for approval of quasi-drugs containing newly developed ingredients is decreasing. The fact that in vitro methods for ensuring the efficacy and safety of cosmetics have not been approved as official methods, and the prohibition of animal testing for safety evaluations in the EU, contribute to this decline. At the same time, some products, including wrinkle-alleviating cosmetics, are being actively developed due to approvals of new methods for demonstrating efficacy. These approvals result from establishment of guidelines and standard testing methods for correct evaluation of cosmetic safety and efficacy, and from regulatory science that harmonizes regulations with development in the cosmetics field. In this symposium, professors from industry, government, and academia will speak on progress and regulatory challenges, safety evaluation methods, formulation technology, application of new ingredients from natural resources to cosmetics, and efforts to obtain new indications that contribute to the development of cosmetics. It is hoped that information to aid in evaluating cosmetic quality and safety will be shared among pharmaceutical and cosmetic manufacturers, academics, pharmacists, and regulatory authorities, leading to the development of safe and reliable functional cosmetics in the future.
