[S02] Metals and microorganisms -Expansion to drug-discovery and environmental science-

Sun. Mar 26, 2023 10:10 AM - 12:10 PM [Room B1] Institute for the Advancement of Higher Education: N1 (Bldg. N: 1F)

Organizer: Seiji Komeda, Shin Aoki

The relationship between metals and microorganisms is strongly associated with the progress of the earth. Since ancient times, microorganisms have acquired the metal ions necessary to sustain their lives, and have affected the global environment by interacting with metals. Microorganisms release iron chelators called siderophores and capture iron present around the microorganisms. Such a microbial iron acquisition mechanism is very useful for the design of new antibacterial agents and microbial sensors that collects only specific microorganisms by selectively using various siderophore derivatives. On the other hand, microorganisms are involved in redox reactions of metals, which give characteristic information of each microorganism, suggesting the possibility of the recovery of precious and/or toxic metals from the environment by using specific microorganisms. In this symposium, we will invite symposium speakers from various research fields related to the interaction between metals and microorganisms, discuss research results at the molecular level, and develop them into drug discovery and environmental science.
