[S13] neo-PTMs: Chemistry and Biology of Hitherto Unknown Biotic/Abiotic Modifications

Sun. Mar 26, 2023 1:50 PM - 3:50 PM [Room B1] Institute for the Advancement of Higher Education: N1 (Bldg. N: 1F)

Organizer: Kenzo Yamatsugu

Life emerges from biomolecules and their intervening chemical networks. For example, the human genome only encodes the primary sequences of 20,000 to 25,000 proteins, but their transcription products, RNA, undergo various splicing and chemical modifications to form approximately 100,000 transcriptomes. Furthermore, the translation products undergo various post-translational modifications (PTMs) to form more than one million proteomes. In other words, it has become clear that life is driven by a greater variety of chemical modifications than previously thought. Furthermore, the molecular structures and functions that chemistry can construct are limitless, and there is no reason why the chemical modifications of biomolecules need to be limited to those that are inherently found. In this symposium, we will define these "chemical modifications that are not originally possessed by living organisms or whose existence is hitherto unknown" as neo-PTMs. We discuss chemical/biological technologies and advancements to find, understand, introduce, and manipulate the neo-PTMs.
