The symposium “Frontiers in studies on anti-viral infectious diseases” is held with different topics every year from 2014. This year has a topic “fight with COVID-19.” To overcome pandemic of COVID-19 that is continuing from the end of 2019, many researchers such as virologists and medicinal chemists have been fighting it. Owing to their efforts, development of technologies for diagnosis and detection of SARS-CoV-2, vaccines and drugs have been performed. Practically, in the last few years, researches on prevention of infection of various variants of SARS-CoV-2, which appear one after another, and medical treatment of infected patients have dramatically been progressed. Useful results on not only COVID-19 but also emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases have been accumulated. In this symposium, medicinal chemistry of anti-SARS-CoV-2 agents learned from HIV researches (Tamamura), ecopharma researches based on factors of COVID-19 severity (Nishida), drug discovery at Center for Research and Education on Drug Discovery at Hokkaido University (Maenaka), drug discovery at a pharmaceutical company (Kato) and development of neutralizing antibodies effective for variants (Kuwata) will be presented. It is desired that new hints of antiviral researches will be produced through discussion in this symposium and that this symposium will help the growing of the entire Pharmaceutical Society of Japan.
