[S28] Treatment strategies including prevention and pharmacotherapy for epilepsy in the pediatrics and geriatrics

Sun. Mar 26, 2023 4:10 PM - 6:10 PM [Room PS4] (2F)

Organizer: Kouichi Itoh

Epilepsy is one of the most common cranial nerve diseases which affects populations across age groups; with a global prevalence of approximately 1%, a significant number of infants, children, and the elderly have the condition. Epilepsy is characterized by specific types of seizure, age-dependent EEG and imaging, besides various other factors and prognoses. Pharmacists frequently come into contact with prescriptions of antiepileptic drugs, and upon appropriate drug treatment, approximately 65% of epilepsy patients go into remission. However, epilepsy is not a single disease and the epileptic syndrome encompasses a cluster of causative factors, as well as diverse symptoms. Little progress has been made in the research on epilepsy onset mechanisms, treatment-resistant epilepsy, and prophylactic treatments. In this symposium, we will discuss treatment strategies-including prevention and pharmacotherapy-for epilepsy in the pediatrics and geriatrics, which are beset with such cases. In pediatrics (Yamanaka, Ishihara) and geriatrics (Tanaka, Itoh), we will present and discuss new treatment strategies from both basic and clinical aspects. We hope that this symposium will aid future medical practice, including the relationship between epilepsy treatment and pharmacists.
