[S45] Considering the current situation and future of the Japanese pharmaceutical industry

Mon. Mar 27, 2023 1:50 PM - 3:50 PM [Room HS1] (1F)

Organizer: Takeshi Suzuki, Koji Chiba

There are only about 10 countries with drug developing capabilities, and Japan is in a position to lead the world in this industry. The so-called innovation gap, difference between the increase in drug developing cost and the number of drugs developed as a result, is a major problem in the pharmaceutical industry. In this symposium, we will examine the current status and future potential of the Japanese pharmaceutical market, which is an officially regulated industry (officially drug pricing system) and has a unique structure due to the universal health insurance system that is different from other industries. We would like to consider what kind of strategy is necessary to create a new and innovative medicine and to always lead the world's medical market. On the other hand, the price reduction of medicines is constantly being pursued as the target of least resistance to cut medical costs. As a result, there is also the fact that it is becoming difficult for domestic pharmaceutical companies to reach levels of earnings comparable to those of multinational mega- pharmaceutical companies. In this symposium, we will consider strategies for building a foundation for the continuous promotion of drug development from Japan from a variety of perspectives, including industry, government, academia, and the mass media. This is a very good opportunity for discussing for the perspective from the industrial activities that has not been discussed much in the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan.
