[S58] The front-line of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)-think AMR research in the future, in which the field of pharmaceutical sciences should play a role-
Tue. Mar 28, 2023 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM [Room D] Institute for the Advancement of Higher Education: S2 (Bldg. S: 2F)

It is estimated that if no action is taken, the annual number of deaths by antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will reach 10 million worldwide in 2050, exceeding the number of deaths by cancer. Therefore, an AMR action plan has been implemented in Japan since 2016. Although the consumption of antimicrobial agents has been decreasing, the isolation rates of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria have not decreased. Since antimicrobial agents are essential for the treatment of infectious diseases, there is a limit to the reduction of antimicrobial use. Another major problem is that AMR has reduced the value of antimicrobial agents, discouraging pharmaceutical companies from developing new agents. To protect existing antimicrobial agents and develop new agents, researchers in the field of pharmaceutical sciences should make a concerted effort to address this problem. However, AMR is still not well-recognized in members of The Pharmaceutical Society of Japan. The aim of this symposium is to make people aware of the current status of AMR in Japan and abroad and of the AMR research that is expected for researchers in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. Here, we introduce AMR countermeasures acted by pharmacists in hospital and pharmacy. Furthermore, the latest AMR research by researchers in microbiology and medical pharmacy are presented. We hope that this symposium activates AMR research in The Pharmaceutical Society and generate cross-disciplinary research themes in biology, medicine, chemistry, and other fields.
